About the Program

Dr. Brenda M. Greene talks with Imbolo Mbue, author of Behold the Dreamers. Mbue’s debut novel is about an immigrant couple from Cameroon who move to Harlem and strive to make a new life for themselves just as the American economy is upended by the recent recession. Dr. Greene and Mbue discuss the motivation for writing the novel, the themes of immigration, global financial crisis, relationships in the book, highlights of the novel, and Mbue’s writing process.


About the Author

In 1998, Imbolo Mbue moved to the United States from Limbe, Cameroon. She holds a BS from Rutgers University and an MA from Columbia University and has published fiction in Threepenny Review. She lives with her husband and two children in Manhattan. Behold the Dreamers is her first novel and was named one of the “Best Debut Fiction of 2016” by Kirkus Reviews and among The New York Times’ “100 Notable Books of 2016.”
